No fewer than 13 people perish and 98 hurt in rail accident in the nation of Mexico.

A tragic railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive critical opposition regarding the rapidity and management of the country's major infrastructure initiatives.

The accident took place on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a rail link developed to connect the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was intended to offer an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring economic development in the area.

“We are going to rigorously clarify what caused this incident,” stated the head of state.

The official confirmed that, of the approximately 250 individuals on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in critical condition. The leader noted plans to visit Oaxaca to speak with those involved.

Flagship Project of Past Leadership

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone infrastructure project of the former leader, whose term concluded the year before. This venture was intimately linked to his government's developmental vision for the southern region.

Another ambitious rail project from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the comprehensive effort to revitalize the economic fortunes of a comparatively less developed part of the country.

Building Management and Worries

The construction of both train projects was managed by the armed forces, marking a significant growth of its role in public infrastructure. They were completed at an rapid pace, beating expectations to be partially inaugurated before the end of that government.

However, this fast-paced schedule had also fueled ongoing questions over construction quality.

  • Sunday's crash was the third event on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This includes an previous crash this month when a train struck a truck at a railroad crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also experienced a couple of non-fatal derailments.

Appeals for Investigation and Halt

In the wake of the disaster, the leader of a primary political opposition demanded an prompt pause in the building and running of all such projects.

This stoppage was suggested until the completion of a full independent investigation. The party emphasized that the situation "requires prompt explanations."

In reaction, the head of state insisted that the train had been functioning in full adherence to all security protocols. Assurances were given that the government would be "accountable" in both the development and running of these vital undertakings.
