The star has handed over the complete sum of his £25,000 Mercury Prize prize money to the Music Venues Trust, which functions to save the UK's small music venues.

The star was presented with the prize on mid-October as his third album the album was named the outstanding release of the previous year.

He has chosen to give the cash to the trust, in appreciation of the essential function small stages had in his beginning days.

"I personally would not have achieved my current career if it wasn't for all the shows I played around the North East, and elsewhere, when I was beginning," said Sam Fender. "These venues are legendary, but they are facing challenges."

Beginning in 2023, more than 150 of these spaces have ceased operations – approximately 16% of the whole industry in the UK.

Over the past year, top acts such as the band Pulp, Coldplay, Katy Perry and Ed Sheeran have all supported the MVT in its initiatives to help venues survive, by adding a modest fee to their ticket costs, which benefits smaller concert halls.

Fender also took part, generating more than £100,000 on his recent tour to support 38 small stages across England, Scotland, and Wales.

The money supported spaces that were dealing with possible closure due to challenges stemming from water damage, fires and personal losses, as well as regulatory hurdles, legal disputes and noise complaints.

Additional spaces received funding support in improving facilities and technical equipment that helped performers and concertgoers.

"The concept that revenue from performances in big venues helps the independent spots, where it all starts for artists like me, is just common sense," Fender has stated.
